Last Friday, the Rocket Football team pulled off a stunning 20-6 upset against the Wichita Collegiate Spartans, improving their record to 2-1. The Rockets, led by head coach Reece Petty, defeated the Spartans for the first time since 2011 in a fierce defensive showdown.
RB/LB Nick Jones led the defense with an impressive 101-yard pick-six for the Rockets’ first touchdown early in the third quarter. Clayton Spaulding also boosted the Rockets’ defense with an interception of his own, helping the Rockets hold the Spartans to only six points.
The Rockets struggled in the first half, with quarterback Isaac Hill throwing 3 interceptions, but they dominated the second half with little issue. “We didn’t really click in the first two quarters, but after halftime we just wanted it more than they did at the end of the day,” said Jones. Jones rushed into the end zone for the Rockets’ first offensive touchdown, and Hill added another rushing touchdown to seal the game.
The Rockets hope to carry this two-game win streak into an away game against Chanute on Friday September 25th. Chanute enters this game 1-2, with a win against Field Kindley and two losses to Louisberg and Mulvane.
